Magpies remember specific human faces. Nesting high above in the trees, they pass down information and memory to their offspring.

I have been inspired by these highly intelligent, curious birds which nest above the Foundling Museum situated in the grounds of the Foundling Hospital, built-in 1739 as a home to London’s abandoned children. Through remembering the faces from the past, the magpies are the silent witnesses of the history of this site.

‘Found’ is a short animated film encompassing a poetic evocation of the history of the Foundling hospital.

‘Lost’ is a book which incorporates working drawings, poems, sightings of magpies and stills from my film ‘Found’.

Magpies gather, watch and chatter. Their feathers ruffle in the wind. Inherited memories of the past are handed down into the present, as both voices are entangled in their calls and the nests they occupy.
